16. Opera. As China has a vast territory with people speaking numerous dialects, hundreds of traditional operas have been derived. However, Peking Opera is the “National” opera (sometimes it is called Chinese opera). It arose in the late 18th century and became fully developed and recognized by the mid-19th century.

There are four main types of performers:

a) Sheng (生) is the main male role.

b) Dan (旦) refers to any female role.

c) Jing (净) is a painted face male role. The painting represents the personality traits of the character.

d) Chou (丑) is a male clown role.

Silk Road: The Silk Road, well known far and near, existed more than 2,000 years ago, when trade caravans of China set out from Chang'an (today's Xi'an of Shaanxi Province) with expensive silk, crossed the Hexi Corridor and entered the European continent. Hence, the Silk Road became an important passage for economic and cultural exchanges between China and Western countries. A prestigious Chinese sea voyager, Zheng He (Chinese Columbus?), traveled through the "Maritime Silk Route" 600 years ago. At its peak, Zheng He's fleet included 30,000 men and 70 ships. He brought back to China many trophies and envoys from more than 30 kingdoms, including a king of Ceylon. Life magazine ranked Zheng He the 14th most important person of the last millennium. Also there is saying that his mission was searching for the grandson of Ming dynasty's creator, who disappeared after Yongle, his uncle, usurped his throne.
